Hi, looking for some advice please.

I'm a recent newbie to modelling, building a layout in OO gauge / DCC and have a NCE Powercab. My layout has 25 point motors ( 2no Cobalt SS the remainder IP Digital - with 10 crossovers).

I've recently added an accessory bus for these motors and have just purchased an Alpha Central and Alpha Mimic and am looking to add the NCE AutoSW for the programming track.

Currently I have 4 DCC chipped locos, one being DCC Sound and as my fleet grows I feel I will need to upgrade my layout to 5amps.

I've been looking at the NCE SB5 Smart Booster but see that DCC Concepts offer the Alpha Power or Alpha Box units ( both these being cheaper than the SB5).

My first question is; - Is either of these a suitable alternative ?
If yes then when I wire the unit do I feed the track bus or the accessory bus or both?

I'm also thinking of adding a PSX-1 Circuit Breaker to the track bus, would this still be necessary?

Any advice recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Malc

Hi Malc - have NCE and used cobalt alpha power and alpha box (also Alpha Central switch boards to operate points - all DCC Concepts points motors) and found it really effective - looks good too!! The power breaker built into the alpha box is reliable. Happy to give any other info if it would be helpful - also was a total newbie until 2.5 years ago!

Malc, why not give us a call as we have talked this through with countless other PowerCab users.

As Euan says, the combination works perfectly and the Alpha Power and Alpha Box have extremely effective protection at all levels. Electronically they are both cleaner and far more robust than the SB5... in addition to being far more cosmetically attractive.

Personally I would feed both busses from the Alpha box and if you really wish to separate protection, add a secondary breaker to the Accessory bus.

I use an NCE system with Procab on the main layout and use 3 x Alpha units as Boosters. And a Powercab and one Alpha on my smaller layout. Works well, to the point where I would say they were designed to work with each other. Even the RJ cables and sockets are the same. Simplest thing in the world to fit together. But, if you find that when you first fit the Alpha, you get power to the track but lose control when the loco goes onto an alpha boosted section, just swap the two track-feed wires around.  This gave me brain overload when I first did it, but a quick call to DCC Concepts (on a Sunday!) sorted it out in minutes. And, as said above, the cutout on the Alpha Box is instant and excellent and probably all the protection you need.

As suggested by Ahjay, gave the team a call and spoke to John, excellent service and advice. Many thanks indeed.
