I have been uploading DCC sounds and sounds of real engines to YouTube for a few years now seeing as the sound of steam is one of my pet hobbies. It is a new hobby as might be expected, but once heard, I could not imagine having a layout without it. I bit the DCC sound bug in a big way after a pal converted his '0' gauge colliery layout to DCC and fitted sound to one of his locos.

I was on the lookout for a member of the GWR 57XX class and so took the opportunity to film 7714 on the Llangollen Line yesterday. The most obvious sound when coasting was the vacuum pump, something I had always associated with ex.GWR engines, but which is surprisingly silent on many preserved locos. The only DCC sound chip that comes to mind with a loud vac pump is Digitrains ZS012A "GWR Hall Class and other GW 2 cyl." I think Paul Chetter also has a variant for the 57XX Pannier which is available from Digitrains....

Also filmed at the Llangollen autumn steam gala weekend was GWR small Pannier 5430 running round it train at Carrog. This was a different animal from the '57XX' in being a very quiet machine. The vacuum pump was somewhat quieter. A drone was also hanging around...
