Any ideas ?
I would like to use / program one of the spare buttons to activate my station lamps using either cobalt Rex, AD1HP or ADS2sx.

No reason not to do that. Not AD1HP (it keeps the power on for only a short time) or AD-S series as thye are for solenoids.

AD2/4/6/ or 8fx would actually be the best option as they are well priced and have good power handling + a fixed voltage output.

Any ADfx individual output can easily become an on/off device simply by adding a diode to the output connection. (so when the output polarity reverses, only one direction has power flow).

If you need more info, just ask.

Thanks, but being new to the hobby I could do with more info. Or a wiring diagram please. What type of diode and which output terminal etc ?

Use any form of common black epoxy cased rectifier diode.

The AD series decoders have an output that is two wires. These two wires swap polarity when the AD decoder changes. If you put a diode in one lead, then when the AD decoder is switched one way it will conduct, but when switched the other way it will not, therefore acting like an on-off switch.

The diode simply goes in series with one wire: ie: One wire directly to the output terminal. The other output wire connected to one end of the diode, the other end of the diode connected to the output terminal.

If you wish to change which way is on and which is off, simply swap the diode end for end.

GWR69 - any particular reason why you are looking to control lighting from your Alpha Central?

I ask as I have the Alpha power, box and central set up but for controlling the track, points and signals. All my lighting is 12v DC to leds and via small switched distribution boards to different parts of the layout - this works pretty well and is very simple to wire as it is just positive and negative outputs. Therefore, if I want to switch lighting on in a particular part of the layout,  I simply flick the corresponding switch!

Cheers,
