Good one.

My "ready reckoner" is based on "A" being introduced in 1963....and works by counting on my fingers, so it is digital! 😉😀

Apparently, at first, you could chose to have the date letter, or not....

The other thing about number plates was that certain combinations of letters denoted the place of registration....at one time a numberplate ending in "FM" was from Chester...there were Spotter's Books with lists!

The current system uses two letters to denote the place of registration...the two letters after the two number date code...and there are now two registration date codes each year....

Others know far more than I do though! 😉😀
Best wishes,

Ruff...

Spotting  registration locations was a game that my Dad played with me when we were out in the car, along with starting with a 1, then 2, then 3 to get up to 9999, took around 2 years, then we would start again.
As we lived close to the Wolverhampton Corporation Omnibus garage, the low numbers could be gleaned quite quickly as a block of numbers from 1 to 25 had just been issued on a fleet of Guy-chassised. They were usually reserved for motorcycles, as now.

Imagine what WUK 1 (wookie) would be worth these days.
The family registration is Mister fifty nine (MR 59), currently on my mother's (Maisie Rust) on a 1959 Sunbeam Rapier in my garage.
Thanks for stirring some happy childhood memories.
Oh,by the way, how sad? See below.
I check registrations on cars on layouts, as an adjunct of the above, whenever l view a layout.Trouble with models is number plates are too legible, and should not be a focal point of any model, they too should be scale-toned.

"L" was the last legal black plate, reflective were optional from around 1965.
Enough, l'm boring myself, let alone all of you. ðŸ˜
