A lovely model of the Waverley there!

The Waverley was built for the LNER, and the model has the same livery as when we went on her. Basically the LNER style, except the white painted deckhouses were grained in imitation of teak, like the LNER coaches.

I understand that the company has now had the deckhouses grained?

The water was something I decided to attempt as there really is no calm water on the North East coast, so the usual ideas just would not look right.

This is the best photo I have at present of the boats. They are artitec kits IIRC, rather nice quality, and if you do not fit the radio antenna will fit many time periods. The paddle steamer is a Langley kit.
Oh and for the resin enthusiasts the lighthouse is a cut down artitec kit to try and match one on the harbour wall at Seaham on the North East coast. The original is way too tall. I put an LED in it because everyone said a lighthouse should have a working light. - OK happy with that, but the tower is solid resin, so I had to drill over 6 ins - (oops 150mm), by drilling form both sides, and nearly missing in the middle!

I don't know about the woodwork Ruff but I do know her boiler has been condemned and they are trying to raise funds to re-boiler her.  Hopefully they will succeed.

"Glasgow" looks similar to the Tyne steam tugs.

That's one big problem with steam engines, the boilers!

The LNER did have a Diesel Electric paddler, the Talisman....
Our kit built OO scale radio controlled paddler (which regrettably we no longer have) was named Talisman, and painted in the Waverley version of LNER livery after we read of this in the Waverley's souvenirs...

The Waverley's deckhouses are steel clad. The LNER used the scumbling technique to make the steel plate look like varnished teak. The Waverley company didn't at the time think it worth the expense and trouble of doing this, as well as the maintenance problem with scumbling...colour matching on patch repainting is difficult, etc.

I still have the set of plans that were sold as souvenirs on the trip we did. This explained the livery.

The steel clad Thomson LNER coaches were also scumbled...

That would make a lovely addition to the railway layout but at 1/76th scale probably a little on the large side!  Interesting story with the scumbling though, I have quite a few LNER teak carriages and one or two that were supposedly scumbled in their time.

As for boilers they do have a life that can be prolonged with good maintenance and effective water treatment but, just as with any other item of machinery they eventually require replacement or refurbishment.  The great thing with the diesel engine of course is that all moving parts can be exchanged, thereby prolonging the life of the engine almost indefinitely.

I always reckon that you can put a boat on a ship but you can't put a ship on a boat!

On my 30 year old {when I bought it} sailing cruiser and it still had the original, yep original, Deck Broom, fantastic!...   had 5 replacement heads and 2 replacement handles...   amazing, what a piece of history.

Yerr…  twern't thad old, us aad thikky lectric loits.

I still have the barometer and clock;  I just bought a nice piece of polished wood, to mount them on, later this week. {Just re-read that and glad I got the comma in the right place.}  I still have the Brass oil Anchor lamp, too, that takes an age to polish.

I'm not sure about the fork handles one came from, but it still make me laugh, even now.  However, the Broom head and handle is a much older seafaring[?] one.  I first came across it at the sailing club at Starcross, over 60 years ago and it didn't sound like it was particularly new then. [The joke, not the broom]

That is a truly beautiful piece of modelling, this angle shows the layout to superb effect, glad the resin held together when drilling the lighthouse,
