which couplers are these?

Hornby couplings perhaps but put on a few years back, so my husband is not sure which he used there, He tried several but preferred Kadees in general, they are handy if you do not want a lot of flex in the train.

Not very helpful I am afraid.

I have to hold my hands up and say I am much more into the terrain and weathering, anything electric, electronic or updates on rolling stock other than a paint job and a bit of plastic is usually down to him, unfortunately he does not type nowadays except for work where he has to.

probably these

I know there is a specific wagon area, but I popped these in the paint area, as that is the main upgrade, there are kaddees, but paint and black ballast is the most noticeable

i was really really nervous the first time i ever airbrushed, in fact the first time EVER I updated somethingI had bought, i had three wagons for the price of two pounds for the trio and still had my heart in my throat as i repainted them, and was really happy with the result, I had taken my first step to weathering

IMG_1714.jpg

some people research and jump right in and get brilliant results first time, and some of us feel their way, i was feel my way, at first i did not use reference pictures, and coloured things how i thought they should look, and i added my first ever graffiti, i was so so chuffed.

not long after having taken the risk i got one people offer me advice, and i got some reference pictures, and came up with this, I am a pretty robust person so some of the less flattering comments just prompted me to up my game.

In my opinion as long as you learn from each project you do successful or not, then you are improving. Would I risk a really nice expensive had to replace locomotive? Likely not. Will I have a go at a cheap one, most likely. Be brave look at your stock look at something that if you dropped it and broke it would not be the end of the world, and try weathering, pop up a picture ask for advice. There are plenty of talented people herewith different ways of a achieving nice results, look t the advice see what you think you are willing to have a go, and do that, have a go. I think you'll be surprised, and pleased, and wow if it really really stinks, I'll all you a cheap easy way to turn it into scenery 😃

fYI I used a red mix for the paint and ochre for the exposed worn wood

IMG_3178.jpg

now these are not 'real' wagons, but for some paint and two pounds for three wagons i am not complaining.

FYI I used grey and added white if differing proportions to get the faded word look.

class 08 4572 a not expensive model which photographs quite well

IMG_4572.jpg

4576 model as bought

IMG_4576.jpg

it does have hidden depths though, the paint job does not show off all the modelling detail

4579 some red does not go amiss

IMG_4579.jpg

4580 both end

IMG_4580.jpg

4582 onto the buffers to

IMG_4582.jpg

4584 the start of some wear and tear

IMG_4584.jpg

4586 some transparent dirt, inferring carried by water

IMG_4586.jpg

4588 the yellow strip, done by hand is a little rough and ready but brings out the detail where it was modelled and the rest i just paint in, I could have (and still could) add some very small plastic strip, some white detailing also added

IMG_4588.jpg

4590 some general dirt to the bogie and hand rails and anything a bit too clean

IMG_4590.jpg

4593 some glazing

right way up and upside down to ensure it is more level

IMG_4593 (1).jpg

4600 once dry and happy with the result, do the other windows

IMG_4600 (1).jpg

4601 some texture on the top, and some depth to the grill work

IMG_4601.jpg

my normal trick with clear water then running the dirt in

4603 some dirt to the roof,  it would benefit from a replacement kaddee but that can be hidden until sorted

IMG_4603.jpg

4609 trial around the layout, with a decent weathered wagon

IMG_4609.jpg

4620 use the scenery to hide the conspicuous inaccurate parts

IMG_4620 (1).jpg

Hornby did a weathered version themselves

looking a t a real one, i am pretty happy with my version
