Mister Rusty
Well, today has been a major event in the annals of this layout.

It has been re-equipped with Cobalt iP digital motors, using NCE Powercab control of points and stock.
I have to say that it has been  a pretty pleasant experience,  DCCconcepts have been superb with a couple of issues that occurred quickly advised.
The layout worked faultlessly once set up correctly.

So a big thanks to all at Settle, l will shout your praise whenever l get the chance.
A quick snapshot or two. 15553693938281927762619923630320.jpg  15553695172503748544029592033533.jpg The new wood is to increase  depth of the boards to protect the motors when in transit.
We're  off to a local show this weekend,  so if anyone wishes us luck, it will be greatly  appreciated.  We have advised the organiser that it is a work-in-progress , but we remain optimistic as to its reliability,  if not the scenery.

More notes to follow
Pete

Shows could do with more of this kind of display, which will be a very positive encouragement for those inspired to start to have fun.  Well done you for putting it up there for people to see.  There are a host of things for the viewer to see, be inspired and learn.

Regards

 Julian - 😊 - thank you -😚
Well, today was the big day, a 5-hour test session.
Nothing went wrong, it all fired up first time, no re-programming, [thanks Mick]
The idea of operating a shunting puzzle [ Inglenook rules ]whilst running a passenger service, certainly adds entertainment and freneticism, especially when the passenger engine needs release along the centre road which is part of the shunting area as well.
Odd bits of dirt caused the odd stutter, but nothing more.
Overall, l am delighted.
Now, into servicing 30 second-hand Kadee-equipped trucks, just for light relief, but first, beddie-byes.
At times, l began to wonder if l was only a bar-stool modeller, but now that all the elements have been brought together, -  sound, camera, lights, action!!!
The layout is now the foundation of all future activity. Good job that it's being run as a preservation line with engineering dispensation for the bridge from Oban to be overloaded. 😃. Visiting Mikados, Pacifics, Garratts and superpower diesels. Hmmm!
Checked with the organiser, Keith. He pointed out that over the many shows that l have attended and assisted, never have l turned up with an exhibit that was not a work-in-progress. 😳 He's right, too, but it is what the public enjoy chatting about.

Congratulations Peter, it sounds like you have achieved a pretty significant upgrade and brought the layout now bang up to date.  I can tell by the post you are pleased as punch about it!  Now you can relax and enjoy the weekend showing off your hard work.

Have a very enjoyable weekend.

Richard - 😳 - thanks - 😊
Sadly, there is no sitting back
Too many projects, too little time, I've probably got enough to keep me going until my 100th birthday 😂 and that's without the further projects that are likely to appear 😆.
the layout used to take 3 operators, to be comfortable, one on fiddle yard, making and and breaking trains in the cassettes, one signalman, traffic manager, one driving. Now, 2 of us sharing it all, and 2 NCE Powercabs mean we can get in to a right pickle very easily. Still the 3 of us always have a good laugh, so one will get a break to look at the show a little better.
One other mod, we will be operating from the front, which will hopefully encourage chat with the punters, so essential in our hobby.
Thanks all for the encouragement
Settle, please include yourselves in those thanks, without you, it would not have happened on so many levels,
Pete

I do model boat and engineering shows on a fairly regular basis with the boat club and, you are absolutely correct, it is the interaction with the public that makes the hard work worthwhile.  Sitting out of sight behind the stand is for a five minute sandwich break only!  You can't beat the feeling when a youngster's face lights up when one of the models produces a dog bark or a flashing light or he sees a model engine display with the engines running on compressed air.

The downside is missing out a lot on what else is going on but we usually have a strong team in attendance and time to go for a wander is usually easy enough to arrange.  It must be so much more difficult with just a couple of you though.  Still, being fair, you are going to spend all day having a laugh and playing with your trains so I could think of much worse things to be doing with an Easter weekend!!

Richard,
I so agree.
Motorways, A roads, tourist spots, trailing around in crowds.
Each!
Give me empty roads and countryside any day.
Shops are pretty much obsolete.

I'm now going to get well-oiled, at least stock axles and Kadees are, overnight penetration ( 😗😨) has already improved those done, so far.
back to the bench 😉

Buchshee performed perfectly, no more, no less for 3 days running continuously, 3 operators, 2 Powercab handsets.
Handsets got warm, with one possible shut-down or handset confusion period for 30 seconds. [We had a coffee-break, it worked perfectly after we got back].
We generally had one diesel idling, one shunting and a preserved steam shuttling in and out of the platform, all sound-equipped. Run-round needing co-ordination between the operators to give the passenger loco a clear road amidst the shunting.
Sorry, we did not get around to a video, but are intending to set up and film shortly at home.
Thanks to various people and companies.
Buchanan McInroy [prior owner, hence the Buch bit of the layout's name, the balance ''shee'' coming from his Scottish penchant for minimising costs]
Mike Finch [fellow Redditch MRC member]
Keith Shakespeare [event organiser]
DCCconcepts [advice, patience, componentry]
Our Place, Alcester [all the little bits].
For those interested, the layout is wired using a transverse wiring system, using rails for continuity, point motors being fed from the point's blade feed mods per DCCc's idea, the frog feed being wired via a 21w bulb and holder. The points were fully modified following the DCCc ideas, spring-boxes removed, improved wiring etc.
Also, it was the first exhibition trialling my version of the Kadee system, using neodymium magnets placed under each rail. Precision positioning is needed, but microscopic movement releases them far better than Kadee's own magnet, which needs track adulteration to work with code 75 as they protrude above the rail-head. We found that just a slow double-tap on the direction change button when on notch 1 sufficed.
Still recovering, so off to bed.
Night, night.

Excellent news Peter.  I'm really pleased for you that it went so well and justified all the hard work that has gone into the layout recently.  Nothing more satisfying than a successful show.
