The size of it, more like a tampon 😲 sorry, could not resist.
I've not seen one fitted in Army hands, they probably lost it.😫

I got the same WWII intended defence purposes - and limited capabilities, given aiming capabilities of WWI Howitzer design.  Thank goodness we didn't have to rely on them for actual invasion defences, given their rather slow aiming systems.

The propaganda from the film was certainly intended, but the locations were kept very much under wraps.  They were only allowed out from their tunnel concealment for actual firing [and a few propaganda films].  Other than these type of appearance, they were certainly kept well under wraps.  Your Gronk was all part of the same concealment of location, [lack of steamer smoke] as you said earlier.  The fact that shells actually landed on Nazi locations would not have been lost on them, despite our knowledge of their limits.  Just one small factor, of many, which kept hitler on the other side of the Channel.

I am so very much appreciative of what so many people did, which gives me and others the freedom to be able to post that, in our time.

Utter and total agreement.
Black Buck 1  is brilliant, and achieved exactly what it set out to do, telling them that they were not out of range.
Mind, have you read the book?
Martin Withers and crew were first reserve, so when they took off, they expected to go straight back. Because of this, they had been on the town at Ascension Island the night before and were worse for wear, and possibly not as well briefed and equipped as they should have been .
As for the shenanigans and bravery of the tanker crews [passing over their own fuel reserves to assist], swapping roles because fuel transfer had failed, so tanked their mate and flew back unable to take on fuel, anticipating a landing in the wet stuff [they did make it back though, but no fumes in the tanks!!]
As for his escapades in America when visiting Nellis bomb comp with a Vulcan [a red flag exercise].
When they landed, there is this dirty great sign , saying no lower than 10,000 feet over The Grand Canyon. Their thoughts were '' Nice to have been in the RAF'', they had flown the length of the canyon below its rim in the Vulcan 😳 They had also sneaked in under the radar. Nellis and Area 51 are opposite ends of the same bit of desert.
The book's title is Vulcan 607.
It also tells of the subsequent Black Buck raids on Port Stanley.
It was never intended to disable the strip too much, hence the diagonal stick, we anticipated using it again. Hercs and Pucaras could use some of it, but it precluded their fast jets, apparently..
Typical Brits, pulling success out of the jaws of disaster.
Hats off and three hurrahs for our guardians.
We do not show our appreciation enough in this country.
Just my humble opinion, of course.

Read the book, many of those involved still live in this area and Martin flew the last Vulcan until it was decommissioned.  Frequently used to fly over our village as the navigator lives here!

The missis caught this with her phone when out walking the dogs one day
