Not attempted this yet.  But as I have been installing frog switching on the layout it occurred to me that rather then isolate the point at the exit rails to the points. If I isolated it several CMs or even feet away I create a section of track with the same polarity on both rails if the point is against the road chosen?  hence it would act as a stopping area to prevent a derailment?  Any flaws in this thinking?

I think that you would merely move the place where the short circuit occurs.  The isolation fishplates stop the connection of "rails", with conflicting polarity, so should you drive a loco over the "distant" isolated join a short circuit would still occur - the same result as at the frog or even feet away.  The clue is in your comment about "same polarity on both rails"

The original Hornby Dublo 2-rail points were live frog, and used isolating rails, rather than isolating fishplates / rail joiners...

They were configured to so prevent a loco running through points set against that road.
I can't remember how the isolating rails were arranged though...there were single rail and both rails gapped units....
Best wishes,

Ruff...

They used to recommend a single gap on the frog side, iirc
Used to sell them by the bucket-load. No one used hacksaws apparently, apart from my Dad.
Remember the blood very well  😳

Julian is correct. It wii create a short. You need to isolate on rail to prevent over-running of wrongly set points - or simply set them up and use them so that the probelm is minimised.
