I want to use some pickups either the spring ones or the wiper ones to put a working lamp on my brake van my question is when it's wired up I assume one wire is negative and the other positive if I was to pick the brake van up and turn to face the other way will the lamp go out or worst short circuit I hope I've made myself clear I'm new to this hobby thanks in advance Gary

It rather depends upon what kit you get for the job.  They vary from ones with a self contained button cell battery, to just the lamps, where you have to find a PCB suitable for DC or DCC and some come complete with a PCB suitable for DC and DCC already with the kit.  DC can be sorted with a Rectifying Bridge, which sorts the polarity.  Suitable PCBs can be found, if you have already got the lamps.

I quite like the button cell ones, which are very simple to install and the batteries last for ages.  I also like the DCC Concepts ones which come with everything you might possibly need for controlling the lamps.  https://www.dccconcepts.com/themencode-pdf-viewer-sc/?tnc_pvfw=ZmlsZT1odHRwczovL3d3dy5kY2Njb25jZXB0cy5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTYvMDMvTkVXLWluc3RydWN0aW9uLWlubmVyLWZvci1FT1QtTGFtcC5wZGYmc2V0dGluZ3M9MTExMTExMTExMTExMTEmbGFuZz1lbi1VUw==#page=&zoom=auto&pagemode=

Gazza. Not being one to struggle with wiring & making pickups I chose to use TrainTech modules.
Using these i have fitted working lamps to coaches & brake vans.
Recently have fitted white leds to the Hornby brake Tender.
So easy to do.
Have a look at Traintech web site under tips you will find a number of my projects posted there.
Regards. Charles.

You obviously have to balance the advantages of not having to fit pick ups against the downside of having to disassemble the model to change the battery.  I'm sure it is down to personal preferences as to which we consider the most challenging.
